Open Bar – Final McCain/Obama Debate

A place for drunken enlightened commentary on the second Presidential debate.

Let’s hope McCain ignores the well intended advice from our one party media and hammers Obama.

It could happen.

Really it could.

Honest.

  2. Pat the Conservative

Alright the plumber story! – name the marxist

  3. opportunity gone… ok maybe not .. nice

  4. Pat the Conservative

Come on John – hit him on that fact that 1/3 of Americans do not pay federal income tax!

  5. Pat the Conservative

OK stop the filibuster and tell us which programs you’re gonna cut Mr Obama

  6. How about mentioning the “dwindling middle class” is mostly a ruse, as most of them are just moving on up to the east side :)

Also, that’s a great response, “Grab the hatchet before you get the scalpel.”

[edit] “If you wanted to go against President Bush, you shoulda ran 4 years ago.”

    His “pair” is growing :D

  7. Pat the Conservative

That might be a killer sound bite “Sen Obama I’n not Pres Bush – if you wanted to run against pres Bush you should have run four years ago!” Way to go John!

  8. Not pres Bush LOL Love it. He isnt taking S**T tonight..

  9. Pat the Conservative

    Alright, a terrorist question opening

  10. You just had to remind me that you support embryonic stem cell research, didn’t you, John…

  11. Pat the Conservative

Yeah and his earlier comment on bringing global warming issues up in his party didn’t exactly warm me up either

  12. Obama “we can have a debate back and forth tonight.. huh? Just now noticing?

  13. You hear about Alaska’s icebergs actually freezing over a bit today, Pat?

You best be running for the hills, folks, because global cooling is making a comeback!

[edit] Give the guy a break, Jason. After all, he’s been tuning in and out since the beginning of it.

  14. Pat the Conservative

Alright John – hit him on ACORN

  15. Pat the Conservative

Oh yeah – hit him on the contents of the Annenburg “education”

  16. You know the minute McCain brought up ACORN and Ayers, the Twitter service failed.. I have a feeling it is starting to smoke. Red Meat for the masses

  17. Uh oh. I think McCain won’t be asked another OpEd for the NYT’s now.

  18. Pat the Conservative

OH yeah – Joe Biden was Rush’s #1 pick for Obama’s running mate too – the human gaff machine

  19. Pat the Conservative

Old liberal talking point – we can’t drill our way out – How else can we increase the supply of oil if we dont’t drill!!??

  20. Magical faeries, Pat.

  21. Columbia for those of you who are too inundated with all the political crap to notice.. A friend we need in that region. Last best hope to stem the communist tide in South America

  22. Friend of mine actually was in Venezuela during the time of “great democratic process”

    Scared him right into Conservatism.

  23. Pat the Conservative

Senator government – say that might be a good nickname for Obama

  24. Pat the Conservative

by definition good people on both sides cannot disagree on moral issues

  25. TXPatriot

Thank God, he’s finally hitting Obama on his baby-killing votes. And Obama spins like a top.

  26. catie

Well, I have to be completely honest here, I’ve been switching back and forth between the debate and Ghost Hunters on Sci-Fi but I’ve been lucky enough to hear some great points by McCain and to see the one not say a word when McCain brought up the t-shirts that those who follow the one wear regarding Sarah Palin.
I, as a parent of a special needs child ds/autism-yes, there are kids with both of those disabilities, I feel McCain and Palin will do more for my child and I also don’t feel the love from any democrat for my child or my husband who serves.
Obama is a fricking liar about this “Born Alive Protection Act”. He doesn’t have a clue-remember it’s “above his pay grade”. Loser.

  27. catie

It’s a child, not a choice you jerk-who votes present at every difficult thing. He is pro-abortion-ie: pro-death. Off my soap box now.

  28. Flession, the other scary point Ecuador facing communist trouble soon. Sister in law from there, My Bro and her have a 2nd home there, likely wont be able to use in the future. It may be confiscated based on “excess”

  29. thickasabrick

Senator Government it shall be! We could only hope for a McCain gaff; his only chance to win tonight.

All hail Obama, First Proletariat! Print enough money until everyone has enough!

  30. Pat the Conservative

Obama wants to get the educational system right – yet he funds the Annenburg project which main goal is to teach our kids how evil our American system is

  31. TXPatriot

Obama, please. I’m a college graduate. I took out loans. I’m totally debt-burdened. My parents weren’t rich, they weren’t able to pay for my education. They bought my books my first semester and that was it. But I graduated ten months ago and have paid off almost half of my debt! I credit that to getting a real degree that I got a good job, instead of a B.A. in “Multicultural Humanities”. If it were up to him, I’d still be stuck in school taking “re-education” classes so I would be more accepting of his liberal/socialist policies.

  32. Pat the Conservative

TXPatriot, if Obama is elected I think a whole lot of us will wind up in re-education camps – because were are evil conservatives

  33. 3rd Presidential Debate 2008, Hofstra University

    Bob Schieffer, moderator

WHY IS YOUR FINANCIAL PLAN BETTER THAN YOUR OPPONENT’S?
McCain: Gives condolences re Nancy reagan’s recent hospital entry; take 700 billion and buy poor loans
Obama: Experiencing worst Wall St crisis; outlines 4-pt plan (jobs, middle class tax cut [under 250K], long-term plan)
McCain: Brings up O’s plumber-man episode, pledges a better result for “Plumber Joe”
Obama: Claims McCain’s been watching tv commercials too much, restates his tax cut plan of 95%, blah, blah, blah
McCain: Says taking Joe’s money to spread the wealth is O’s plan
Obama: Repeats that he wants to cut taxes, but admits to raising taxes, cites oil companies as the example of those making over 250K/yr (McCain interrupts for once, calling O’s plan a tax raise on too many of us)

    HOW TO REDUCE THE DEFICIT?
Obama: Says that the rescue plan means that taxpayers will get their money back; claims that he will make a net budget cut in spending; says he will cut a dollar in spending for every increase in spending he proposes; “embrace a culture of responsibility”
McCain: Cites a Clinton-era house value program; states that energy independence is key; spending freeze, marketing assistance program, etc, line item veto pork programs
Obama: Says spending freezes don’t work, says it’s too blunt; gives us a history lesson, touting Clinton’s [GOP-led Congress, actually] budget surplus
McCain: “If you wanted to run against President Bush, you should have run against him 4 years ago” [muted clapping]; “When have you EVER stood against your party?”
Obama: I stood against the Dems in tout reform, education reform; I mistake your policies with Bush’s because you support Bush too much
McCain: You’re wrong, I have the scars to prove it, youR claim that you stand up against the Dems is weak

WHY SO MEAN TO EACH OTHER? [Schieffer is just a sniveling little girl to ask this wussified question]
McCain: Had O agreed to town hall meetings, it wouldn’t have been so tough; I regret some of the negativity; cites John Lewis’ insanity of late, charging O with a need to repudiate the idiot’s comments
Obama: I expect campaigns to be tough, cites CBS poll saying 2/3 of America feels that the campaign is too mean; acts magnanimously by saying, “I can take 3 more weeks of negativity directed at me, but the American people can’t take 4 more years of Bush policy” [*sniff*]
McCain: Brings up the faulty stemcell ads, spending unprecedented money on attack ads, highlights that O didn’t repudiate Lewis comments
Obama: Soft peddles Lewis’ comments, flipping the script on John and Sarah for not chastising the crowd when some lone idiot in the crowd screamed “terrorist”, “kill him”
McCain: “I’m proud of the people that come to our rallies”, hits O with the fact that one person in the crowd doesn’t mean that he and Sarah are fostering it
Obama: What’s most important is to solve two wars and our economic malaise by working together
McCain: Dismisses Ayers himself, but brings up O’s association with him, Acorn [O smugly laughs during this exchange]
Obama: Says Ayers is a professional; Ayers was doing these despicable acts when he was 8; strings Ayers to Reagan’s friend Annenberg, claims that Ayers isn’t involved with my campaign; Acorn doesn’t have anything to do with my campaign, I only represented them in a court case years ago; I only associate with Buffet, Biden, Luger, General Jim Jones
McCain: You and Ayers sent 230K to Ayers while you were on the board with him; all details need to be known (Obama interrupts)

WHO WILL YOU BRING INTO THIS GOVERNMENT?
Obama: Biden would be great if he had to take over as potus, never forgot where he came from; shares my core values
McCain: Sarah is a role model to women all over, reformer, oil maverick in Alaska; she will be my partner; understands special needs children/families; I’m proud of her
Obama: I don’t know if she’s qualified to be potus, it’s up to the American people; autism programs will require some spending, so if you want across-the-board cuts, it’ll be hard
McCain: Biden is qualified, but made some poor choices on the wars in Afghanistan & Iraq; notice that O constantly brings up new spending in times of financial crisis

HOW TO REDUCE DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL?
McCain: We can eliminate our dependence on ME and Venezualian oil by building nuclear power plants, cites idiot Left’s and Obama’s hand-wringing over having “clean” power, which belies the many navy subs that run on nuclear power
Obama: In ten years we can eliminate our need for ME oil; says we need to tell oil companies to “use it or lose it” re the 68 million acres they have leased [whether there’s oil underneath that land or not, apparently]; says Bush/McCain have followed an “any trade is good trade” policy
McCain: O is eloquent, but you have to watch his words–cites O’s quote, “I want to LOOK at offshore drilling” [good one, finally]; cites trade policies that are good with south-of-the-border countries, maybe you ought to travel south of the border so you’d be able to see it for yourself
Obama: Says that labor issues keep him from endorsing Columbian free trade; says energy independence will help car & trucking industry
McCain: O doesn’t want to sit down with our best trade partner in S America, but WILL sit down with Chavez without preconditions (O smugly laughs again)

    HOW TO IMPROVE HEALTH CARE?
Obama: Need to increase coverage and reduce costs, cites little old ladies he shoke hands with who were afraid of their coverage; says he will cut the average family plan by 2,500/yr
McCain: Pain is being felt and cost is the problem, need to do many things to alleviate it (put medical records online, reduce child obesity, etc); turns to Joe the Plumber as he lays out how capital gains will affect health care
Obama: Joe, your fine is zero, as McCain interrupts, he says that small businesses will be exempted [huh? Even the small businesses which make over 250K/yr?], goes on to say that he will give a credit to Joe; says McCain’s credit program for health care ISN’T good for elderly; claims providers will cherry-pick under McCain’s plan
McCain: “Hey Joe—you’re rich”, explaining that O wants to spread around Joe’s profit over 250K/yr; explains that he will give back 5K to average people, not “golden parachute” earners; O wants gov’t to do the choosing, I want Joe to do the choosing
Obama: Says McCain will risk your employer-paid healthcare

SHOULD ROE V WADE BE A SUPREME COURT ISSUE?
McCain: It should never be a litmus test for Supreme Court appointees, it should only be a states-rights issue; cites O’s fear of voting for Alito and Roberts over abortion, saying that one shouldn’t care about such issues for approving justices
Obama: I agree in no litmuses for justices; this election is of dire consequences for those who want to protect the right to choose; women only know best, and it shouldn’t be up to states; cites Ledbetter example in equal pay for equal work [huh? Irrelevant argument]
McCain: It was a trial lawyer’s dream (Ledbetter); O voted against allowing medical help for babies in failed abortion procedures, voted against a ban on partial birth abortions
Obama: It sounds incredible that I wouldn’t vote for life-saving care for infants because it isn’t true—I voted against the Illinois state bill because there was already a law on the books about it; no exception for the life of the mother in the other bill I voted against; says there’s common ground between right-to-lifers and pro abortionists
McCain: Restates the eloquence of O as he shades his radical views, citing the ‘life of the mother’ clause O hides behind, reminding that he and Cindy adopt

IF WE SPEND MORE THAN ANY OTHER COUNTRY ON EDUCATION, WHY ARE WE SO LOW?
Obama: Says we need more money and more results [lawyerly eloquence again—a politician talking out of both sides of his smug mouth]; cites high tuition preventing grads from having a good life, proposes a 4,000 dollar credit [huh? Has anyone seen how high even state colleges charge for one year of tuition? (10,000/yr is average)], surprisingly chastises lazy parents for letting kids play video games too much
MCcCain: Says school choice is the answer; reward good teachers, fire bad ones
Obama: Tradition of local school ownership needs Federal bearocrats to “step up” to the issue; chatises Bush’s “No Child…” for leaving the money behind; agrees with McCain for firing bad teachers, disagrees with vouchers, affordability assistance
McCain: Cites Wash DC voucher program that many inner-city families clamor for; defends “No Child…”, saying it needs to be reformed not trashed; says he and Sarah will spend the money on autism programs and more for education programs (O nods thoughtfully)
Obama: Agrees with McCain on poor DC schools, citing new superintendent working wonders; still criticizes vouchers, saying vouchers don’t help America-wide
McCain: Mocks O’s statement that because there aren’t enough vouchers, we scrap it all

    CLOSING REMARKS
McCain: Thanks Hofstra; we can’t keep doing what we’ve done for the past 8 years, we need reform; I’m a maverick; stop earmarks; I’ve sacrificed for this country, and I will again for you
Obama: Thanks John and Bob for moderating; we’re in the worst economic time we’ve been in since the depression, can’t go with Bush’s failed policies; invest in the people again; repair won’t be quick; please vote for me, I’ll work tirelessly

Once again, as far as presentation and depth of knowledge, this debate showed two almost-evenly matched opponents. As it’s been said, the viewer will likely see these debates, and remain supportive of who he/she was before it. I am a Conservative, and I favor less government, believing that as F.A. Hayek said, increased government (socialism) is The Road To Serfdom. I may be in slight peril, now, with an unexpected layoff befalling me, but this doesn’t mean that I become a crybaby, seeking for someone to come rescue me. (I am moving out of my duplex because of this misfortune, cutting all unnecessary spending and hunkering down as I have a few other times in my life) Instead, it means that I become a resilient, no-nonsense agent of survival, employing my God-given talents, faculties, and maybe, just maybe, a little good fortune to weather this temporary storm.
    I score: McCain: 2
    Obama: 1

  34. TXPatriot

Pat, I think you’re right. Unfortunately, I don’t think McCain did enough to win this debate in a knockout. As much as I hate to say it, I think tomorrow will be the “first” day of the Obama/Biden presidency. May God help us all.

  35. McCain Won. And actually didn’t piss us off entirely in the process. Though it started with the Mortgage thing.. Joe the plumber ROCKS!

Good Job Mac.. Proud of your butcher skills at times.

  36. TXPatriot

Hey, Nina Easton on Fox called him Senator Government too! It wouldn’t stick if there weren’t a grain of truth.

  37. Pat the Conservative

I’m so sick of fat Franks bogus focus group noboby came in there supporting Obama yet after this debate they’ll all vote for him – yeah right give me a break!

  38. Frank Luntz is personally a Republican.. but there is a concerted effort for some liberals to try to bust in on these things IMO.

  39. catie

It is nice to see you again John and your excellent recap of the debate.

  40. catie

Here’s old Charlie Krauthammer again saying Obama “won”. Uuuggghhhh

  41. Catie, Up until recent I had respected Krauthammer’s opinion, but it seems he has been missing the point lately.. sigh..

  42. Thank-you, Catie! It’s nice to be back. Been hibernating with my pc to plaster Monster, CareerBuilder, Dice, etc with my wonderful resume, lol, for the past week. I believe I’ve done everything that can be done for now.
Need to distract myself a bit with some lighthearted things like this to keep my chest from tightening and my bloodpressure from rising. So, coming on here to jawbone with likeminded friends like you, Jason, Snix, Mike, et al helps me to relax a bit, and take my mind off things for a while.

BTW, loved your comment, “He doesn’t have a clue-remember it’s “above his pay grade”. Loser.”

  43. larddiet

Jason GIlman-You might recall this. Early on in the Reupblican Presidential campaign, Foxnews followed their debate with a text message poll. The winner of that poll was Ron Paul. I think you hit the nail on the head with the Dem loaded Frank Luntz control group. Seeing “moderates” being swayed does seem to effect opinions.

  44. Glad to see the reviews are back and I still wish you the best in finding a job soon, John.

  45. Thanks, Flession, I appreciate it. This economy in South Florida is a little worse than the rest of the country (7.5% unemployment in my county), and the responses from the internet aren’t exactly flooding in, so the wise thing for me will be to broaden my search, little by little, until I’m taking a job–any job-that is out of my field (IT) as has happened before in my life. (framing, siding, dishwasher)

Thank gawd a lot of the Mexican illegals around here have fled back home during our downturn [another example of how much these South American "migrant workers" really LOVE America. At least I don't trash the US when it's suffering from a devalued dollar and run away. Who says that they want to be Americans, anyway? What they want is our dollars, and that's it. When their untaxed payroll dries up, they're the first to head back to Chihuahua]. Maybe that will leave some of the yards to be mowed by real Americans like me who loves this great country whether I’m making money at it or not.

  46. latinchic

He did not go after Ayers and Acorn like I would have liked him to.

But all in all, I think McCain did great. And he can thank his Freudian slip, and Joe for that.

Joe the Plumber has just replaced Joe Six-Pack.

  47. drowning in a sea of liberals

Joe the Plummer is the October Surprise and instant media hit. He’ll make the media rounds the next week with such excellent statements as; “To be honest with you, that infuriates me,” plumber Joe Wurzelbacher told Nightline’s Terry Moran. “It’s not right for someone to decide you made too much—that you’ve done too good and now we’re going to take some of it back.”

“That’s just completely wrong,” he added.

Of course ABC defends BO’s plan. We just need a dozen more like Joe..

Appeals to the working class and all the others like me who feel the same way. Income redistribution and taxes suck.
