McCain Starts ‘Grassroots’ Foundation
From his (suddenly resuscitated) fans at the New York Times:
McCain Starts ‘Country First’ PAC
By Michael Falcone
January 7, 2009
Less than two weeks from the inauguration that he hoped would usher in his own presidential administration, Senator John McCain announced the formation of a new political action committee that will work to promote Republican causes.
Borrowing a slogan from his campaign, Mr. McCain is calling the committee, “Country First,” and it is likely to help lay the foundation for his 2010 re-election bid.
In an e-mail message to supporters on Wednesday, Mr. McCain described it as a “grassroots organization” that would take up the challenge of defining “our Republican ideals and message” and support G.O.P. candidates.
“With your help we can work to elect these new leaders to governorships, statehouses, the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives in 2010 and beyond,” Mr. McCain wrote in the message. “Once in office they will become fierce advocates for limited government, economic opportunity, personal responsibility and strong national security.”
And the Arizona senator is already beginning to build up a war chest for the next election cycle, inviting supporters to become charter members of Country First with an online contribution. Suggested donations range from $25 to $5,000, the annual individual contribution limit for political action committees.
The committee’s Web site features a short biographical video about Mr. McCain in the style of a political ad. Mr. McCain, 72, announced in late November that he planned to run for a fifth term in the Senate in two years.
Sheesh. At first we thought this might be a cruel joke from the Onion.
But alas, it’s all too true.
(Thanks to Catie for the heads up.)

My, my. Will wonders never cease?
After this wolf in sheep’s clothing turns around to besmirch Sarah right after the election was over, I smell something fishy, here. What he’s looking for is NOT us, to be sure. He’s putting a facade on this PAC by advertising that it is a “grass-roots” organization, seeking to promote “limited government, economic opportunity, personal responsibility and strong national security.”
Yeah, right. This is McCain we’re talking about, here. Remember when the NC state GOP tried to run the Obama ad that begged us to look at his credibility/trustworthiness through the Wright prism? McCain used his harshest language and tones for them, Bill Cunningham, and anyone who tried to remind this 30-year senator what it’s like to live on the streets of this country.
It’s all about money. This PAC will serve as a money fund for McCain’s country-club Republicans who sneer at those of us who come from farmer-class beginnings, who still fear God and try to not only say it, but live it. It will be used as a shield for compliance with individual-donor limits, and there will probably be some kind of scandal about it’s usage in 2010, 2012, or beyond.
Ultimately, it sounds like a reaction to Obama/Soros/Move On’s Superfund, which netted almost 1 billion dollars for him this time around. This might be Millionaire McCain’s attempt to compete.
John, when this came this afternoon I about feel off my chair. I thought it was a joke but alas it’s not. I heard Rush even mention it before he signed off for the day as well. Well, I gotta say this for him, he’s got more cajones with this site than he showed during the campaign.
This clown won’t get another thin dime out of me and he’s got a lot of nerve asking for more of my hard earned cash. (BTW he’s asking for a minimum of $25 to be a charter member.) He doesn’t represent the Republican party I care about. Let him get his “grassroots” from his country club friends.
I’m with you guys.. couldn’t add anything productive really…
