At the time the Republicans were "blue" but the gist of it was the Republicans turned "red" because it was Nancy Reagan's favorite color. I think it was on Fox News but can't say for sure. Not that I track these things. At least that’s what was explained 4 years ago when they broke with that tradition because of the “red state/blue state” business that became part of the public consciousness with the 2000 election. I expect that they’ll have to keep it that way from now on because it would confuse the democrats to change it.
